Our St. Philip’s mission statement is

“Welcoming the weary…Dedicated to discipleship”

As a congregation following Jesus Christ, we seek to open our doors to all who come, regardless of race, class, gender, disability or religion; and to reach out in service to our neighbors, especially the poor and elderly.

As individual members of His family we seek to grow daily in the understanding and practice of our faith, and to care for one another as beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:28-30

We are St. Philip’s Episcopal Church located in Norwood, NY, a Parish of the Diocese of Albany. Our Bishop is the Right Rev. Jeremiah Williamson.  Our Rector The Rev. Kathryn Boswell has retired and we are in the search process for a new Rector.

Holy Eucharist or Morning Prayer services are held at 10 a.m. on Sundays, normally on alternating Sundays.  All are very welcome, and all who follow Jesus Christ are welcome to share Communion with us.

Our community ministry is Common Cents Thrift Shop, to provide clothing and housewares at very low cost, or at no cost in cases of great need. The Common Cents Thrift Shop has relocated to the Methodist Education Building on Harrison Street behind the Methodist church.

St. Philip’s offers a Community Luncheon on the last Wednesday of each month. There is no charge, but any donations benefit the Norwood/Norfolk/Raymondville Outreach. Lunch is served from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

      Hello, Cathy,

I’ll give you the email address of the woman in our parish who has been our contact person with this ministry. Her name is Karen Morgan: her email address is ktmorgan@twcny.rr.com
Karen can put you in touch with the right people if you’d like to get involved as well.
      God be with you,

Cathy, I just accessed the website and saw your message. I am not sure if anyone every was able to contact you, but I am doing so now. I did participate in this ministry, sewing two clergy stoles. One was sent to Afghanistan and one was to be placed in a prominent place in Washington, D.C. – Air Force building or something such as that. Since I finished the last stole I haven’t heard anything further from the woman who initially was contacted by the military to sew these. However, I will contact her and ask her what the status is and will let you know her response. If you want to contact me my e-mail is ktmorgan@twcny.rr.com.

    Dear Rev. Boswell,

St. James Church vestry in Au Sable Forks, NY is discerning whether to sell our rectory. We understand that you recently sold your rectory and we wanted to know the process involved and if proceeds from the sale were reserved in an account for ongoing and future housing allowance.
Please call or email me any information you may have.
Thank you and may God bless you,

Its a beautiful church building. Can anyone tell me when it was built and perhaps the name of the architect?

    • saintphilipsnorwood's avatar

      Hello, Tom,
We were built about 1875 – I will look up the information I have on the church’s history and get back to you with more specifics. It is indeed lovely. If you live anywhere near Norwood, please visit us!

    • saintphilipsnorwood's avatar

Hello again, Tom. Here’s the information I found in our file. The church was organized as St. Andrews Mission in 1874, but the cornerstone of the Church was laid in 1879, and services weren’t begun in the church building until 1885. The interior was finished between 1892 and 1894, and in 1894 the name of the church was changed to St. Philip’s. I don’t know who the architect was.

The church is made up of members who are willing to search for new ideas and to accept people of diverse backgrounds, and yet honor the tradition and historical nature of the Episcopal church.
